How to Price a Consignment Car in Malaysia Without Overpricing
A practical consignment pricing framework based on exact variant, manufacture year, competing listings, condition, time-to-sale and net proceeds.
Match the right vehicle before comparing prices
An expensive asking price for a different facelift, engine, trim or manufacturing year can distort a valuation. A useful comparison should separate registration year from the year of manufacture and confirm specifications against registration documents and physical identifiers. The same badge name can cover different equipment, transmissions, engines and updates.
For continental and premium models, detailed provenance can materially influence buyer interest. Service history, previous repairs, accident disclosures, imported versus locally supplied specification and available manufacturer support all deserve review. No single marketplace's advertised price should determine the result.
- Confirm the model generation and facelift rather than copying the first listing that looks similar.
- Separate manufacture year, registration year, actual mileage and the exact trim.
- Record available service invoices, tyre condition, major wear items and disclosed repairs.
- Check whether competing advertisements are current, duplicated, dealer-owned or stale.
Understand asking prices versus achieved sale prices
A car can be advertised for weeks at a level buyers will not accept. An advertisement disappearing may be a demand signal, but it can also mean deletion, renewal, repricing or a listing moving elsewhere. Use several sources and repeated observations; distinguish confirmed transaction information from a proxy such as listing removal.
For consignment, the point is not to chase the highest visible number. The initial asking price should create credible buyer enquiries while allowing a documented negotiation range and a sensible outcome after commission, any repairs and lender settlement.
Calculate the seller's objective as a net amount
Start with the desired seller proceeds, then separately account for agreed consignment remuneration, necessary settlement obligations and approved expenses. A simple illustration: an RM80,000 completed sale with RM3,000 in agreed seller-borne fees and RM45,000 to settle with the lender leaves RM32,000 before any other disclosed adjustments. This is arithmetic only—not an Intercontinental Motors commission quote, offer or prediction.
Conversely, if the seller needs a fixed minimum net payout, work backwards to a plausible sale level and test it against comparable buyer demand. If the market cannot support the required total, an honest discussion may lead to a different selling route or a decision not to proceed.
Set a review cadence instead of letting the listing stagnate
A good marketing plan defines when enquiries, viewing requests and offers will be reviewed and how the seller will authorize changes. For example, the seller and dealer may agree to discuss a price adjustment after an agreed observation period, rather than using an automatic undisclosed reduction.
Do not count views and likes as sales. Stronger signals include qualified enquiries, finance-ready buyers, arranged inspections, repeated objections about price and trustworthy evidence about comparable vehicles actually transacting.
Publish transparent vehicle facts and qualify uncertain ones
A useful public listing states what is recorded and what still needs confirmation. If the manufacturing year, accident history, warranty or final on-the-road buyer costs have not been verified, they should not be presented as guaranteed facts.
At Intercontinental Motors, an advertised listing amount should be distinguished from a final written OTR quotation. Confirm whether the RM2,888 processing policy and applicable first-year road tax are already reflected in a particular transaction, and obtain insurance or takaful separately. Avoid double counting.
Questions sellers ask
Should I use the most expensive similar online advertisement?
No. Verify the actual model variant and year, remove obvious duplicates or stale listings, and evaluate competing cars' condition and demand.
Does a disappeared car advertisement mean it sold?
Not necessarily. Removal can result from a sale, withdrawal, repost, change of platform or other reasons. Treat it as a signal until corroborated.
Can the dealer change my consignment asking price?
That should follow the signed authority and price-review rule. Ask to require your explicit approval for changes or offers below the agreed range.
Sources and scope
Official references support the inspection and transfer framework, not a standardized dealer-consignment contract. Terms, fees, custody, payouts and approval depend on the actual written agreement. This article is general information, not a guaranteed offer or legal advice.
